Good deals on budget breakers at Hen House...

If you saw the picture of my empty fridge yesterday, you can understand why I am feeling so much pressure to stretch our $50 budget this week! I have no choice but to make more than one stop and to only pick up the very best deals. Of course, I am not only keeping value in mind but nutrition.

I did pretty good tonight! My overall savings was 63%.! I spent $19.58 pre-tax and saved $31.00. I achieved this number buy combining sales, manufacturer's coupons and coupons for a fundraiser store coupon book that someone gave to me. (Thanks again, Aunt Carol!)

Here is what I got:

1 Jumbo pack of Huggies
1 box of Cheerios (free)
1 box of Nabisco mini saltines
2 gallons of Ocean Spray Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice
1 dozen organic eggs
1 gallon of hormone free whole milk
1 gallon of hormone free chocolate milk
1 half gallon of Edy's ice cream
4.25 lbs of oranges
6.25 lbs of grapefruits (free)

While a 63% savings is not my highest yet, I'm pretty impressed by it considering my purchase included a good amount of produce, organic and hormone free goods and the worst budget breaker of all -- DIAPERS!

We'll hit another store tomorrow morning and that will be it for the week. In the meantime, don't forget about my Help Haiti fundraiser. You can also see last week's purchase here.

  1. I enjoy your posts very much. But I have to ask, where do all these "free" products come from? I can honestly say I have never come out of a store with free items - unless it was a buy one, get one. Please, share your secret.

  2. I don't have a single really great "free" secret! In this post, the Cheerios were $1.98. I had a $1 off store coupon and a $1 off manufacturer coupon, so when I combined those they were free. The bag of grapefruits was free if you bought two bottles of Ocean Spray grapefruit juice.

Another things that I have been using recently is the Kashless website in conjunction with Recycle Bank. I've gotten some really good coupons from there that have been for either free items or coupons that will make an item free when paired with a sale. You can read about how to use those websites here, http://www.moneysavingmom.com/money_saving_mom/2010/01/hot-300-free-recyclebank-points-per-week-free-magazine-subscriptions-and-coupons-for-free-products.html#comments.

Other than that, I just watch for good sales and match them with high value coupons. Occasionally, I will sign up online to receive a coupon for something free via mail. There are several good websites you can watch that will highlight offers for free items. One of them is www.moneysavingmom.com. On the left hand side of her blog, there are ads for several others. I personally don't highlight any of those offers because I feel like there are already SO many blogs that do that. I am more concerned with budget living and how to manage it.

I hope that helps! If you have more questions, feel free to email me. : )
